You are capable beyond your wildest dreams. Take that leap, do that hard thing. Obstacles? What’s an obstacle? — Velli

Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm

  • Y’all are never going to believe this: We are now a bull testicle free zone. We got the job done last weekend with just the two of us. So far, both calves seem to be doing fine. Truly, the hardest part was getting the little guys contained. Because we ran everyone through the chute a few weeks ago for shots (and my failed attempt at banding the boys), they all remembered that the chute is where bad things happen, and no one wanted to go near it. (Cows have shockingly good memories.) But, we eventually got them in and got the work done, finishing literally minutes before a gnarly thunderstorm rolled through. (If you want to test the strength of your marriage, may I suggest trying to castrate bulls for the first time with an imminent thunderstorm bearing down on you from the west.)

  • We are FINALLY catching up on rain after a super dry June. The garden, which has been so slow to get going is beginning to flourish. Corn should be in soon, and I think our first few tomatoes are starting to ripen!

  • I caught these two babies gossiping about me out in the field the other day.

    shhh! I think she’s coming!

Here’s What I Loved This Week

I’ve been devouring Ann Patchett’s new collection of essays, “These Precious Days.” They’re funny, thoughtful, and just expertly crafted—like little presents you get to unwrap one at a time.

I have not read "Truth and Beauty" but just listened to "The Dutch House" with Tom Hanks narrating and I absolutely LOVED it. I will seek out these others. Thank you
