Another non-farmer question - Benni is 600 pounds but you want her to gain weight (!), how do you know? Do you have a scale or just eye-ball her ribs or something?
Good question! It's a pretty small barn and it's full of hay bales, so there really isn't room for everyone. Luckily, I have just enough room for Benni. Cows and sheep survive just fine on the plains of North Dakota and in Patagonia, so our southern winters are not terribly hard for them...but if I have an animal that isn't as hearty as I'd like, it's nice to have a barn as an option.

non-farmer here so I'm just curious - Why not put all the animals into the barn if the weather will be crap?
