Take time to smell the clover. Let your grass grow tall. Feel what you feel. Move at your own pace. You deserve to do life on your terms. — Ruth Bader Ginsbird Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm For the first few years here I struggled to grow squash due to the relentless assault of squash bugs. BUT! I have figured it out! I now plant super late (not until July!). By then, the lifecycle of the squash bugs is just about wrapped up. Unfortunately, I have now become a victim of my own success. I’ll spend the weekend making zucchini bread and squash fritters for the freezer.
Oh, too bad about Veli, but I think she must've heard about the Bravermountain Porch Sisters and decided that's the life she wants to lead? Thank you for the RBGinsbird affirmation and the lovely Mary Oliver poem. I will take my old body into the morning and sing (do my best at my job that I love!).
Love your animal's philosophical and inspiring, self-affirming quotes! And Veli... what a sweetie. Perhaps another guardian dog not afraid of loud noises will come your way. In the meantime, Veli is so fortunate to have a good home.
Love that poem. I used it as the opening reflection the first time my staff and I gathered on Zoom after the pandemic shut us down and which caused me to have panic attacks in the middle of the night. Thank you for the reminder! Oh and maybe Veli needs a buddy to help guard livestock?
Also, good tip on the squash. I planted at my usual time, and weirdly did not get assaulted by the squash bugs for the first time EVER. The plants managed to survive long enough for me to get tired of their fruit. I may try your approach next year though, because I have no idea what I would have done differently this year that kept them at bay.
