Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm
A neighbor dropped off two giant pumpkins and everyone had a field day. It’s so fun to watch your critters dive into a treat. Truly a highlight of being a farmer!
We are now well into grazing stockpiled winter forage, and I’m wondering if I’ll need to buy more hay. Last year I made it through late January before the summer stockpile was gone, but there’s just so much less regrowth this year due to the dry fall. Lucky for me, my hay farmer is a good friend and I’ve asked him to hold back another 10 bales, just in case I run low. Here’s hoping I don’t need them though, because hay isn’t cheap.
My parents have put in a huge amount of work to help me get the last of the garden beds ready for winter, pulling weeds and adding a layer of compost to each bed. I’ll try and finish the project this weekend, and then I can not think about the garden for a few months. I’m so thankful I had their help to get this done!
Here’s What I Loved This Week
Standing outside a few days ago, I heard the unmistakable call of migrating sandhill cranes. I looked up and saw a dozen or so playing in an air current eddy. Every year they show up here for a day or two. I love their prehistoric sounds and the fact that they feel the woods on this farm are a safe place to rest on their way south.
Missing our sandhills from back in Paynes Prarie , FL ... Out here in Oregon we have wonderful large flocks of "Canada Geese" Do there ever go home ? I love their noisy honks .
Love you AC!
