Your future is so bright. Nothing but sun naps and dirt baths and all the things that bring you joy lie ahead. Keep going; you’re getting to the good stuff. — Elizabeth Cady StantHen
Here’s What’s Happening At Goopd Spirits Farms
I successfully caught my first swarm all by myself this week! I heard the swarm before I saw it, walking outside and hearing the low hum of 1,000 bees all huddled together on a fence post. I hauled out a new hive, opened the top, put on my bee suit and got to work. First: You spray the bees with a mixture of water and sugar. This essentially distracts them (they are busy licking the sugar off themselves) while you scoop them up and place them in the new hive. I somehow managde to get stung once THROUGH my thick leather gloves, but otherwise, I safely got the bees into their box. The bee yard is really growing!
The sheep have been chowing down on our worst invasives: privet and multiflora rose. They won’t eat the stalks, like goats, but I sure do love watching them strip the leaves down to nothing.
Poor Beakers—my funny little chicken with a hairdo that reminds me of the Muppet scientist—has been unwell. I separated her from the flock and treated her for mites, while offering her all the best treats: Hard boiled eggs, bananas, and sunflower seeds, plus vitamin and electrolyte-enhanced water. She seems to be better today, so I am hopeful she just needed a few days of rest away from the other gals.
Here’s What I Loved This Week
My sister gifted me the novel “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” and I thoroughly enjoyed ripping through it. If you came of age in the late 90s // early 2000s, and want to read a great story about friendships, add this one to your list.
Yay for bees! I'm so excited to hear about this new "crop."
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is such a great book about creative relationships/friendship. Loved it.
