This is my face when I find out you’re skimping on rest and relaxation time because your plate is so full. You deserve a break. Let’s do less hustle culture and more rustle through the grass for the good snacks culture. — Nurse

Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm

It’s awkward squash season, y’all! Look at this very weird boi just hanging out in my pumpkin patch. This is a candy roaster melon, which is, as you may have guessed, as sweet as candy when roasted—even if it has a face only its gourd-ious mother would love.

Mama is teaching her littles how to pick through the compost pile to find worms and bugs. It is so fun to watch her kick away a layer of dirt and then call them over when that kick reveals something worth pecking at.

Here’s What I Loved This Week

Friends! I know this is so generic! Everyone loves friends! However, this past week I’ve heard from friends new and old, and it has brought me so much joy. Your friends love you and miss you. If you have a free moment, you should definitely call them! (My college bestie recently sent me this photo of us together in the dorms sophomore(?) year, and it about broke me in two. Oh to have access to such close friendships like this now in my late 30s!)

1. I love mama chicken -- her color is gorgeous!

2. Speaking of "gourd-eous," I have never heard of a candy roaster gourd! Do you think it could handle winter in Zone 9 (North Central Florida, aka The Swamp)?

You and the critters are my oasis of positivity and my virtual link to nature. I love this week’s column, especially keeping up with the formerly elusive hen & her chicks! Coincidentally, an off-the-grid friend gave me (a city dweller) a dozen of their farm fresh eggs this week for my 70th birthday. Wow! What a difference. I so admire & thank all you people who grow food.
