Mooooving On Up

Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm
The farm survived without me for two nights, and it felt great to get away. The only hitch was that Veli, with her separation anxiety, decided to go looking for me. We have excellent fencing along the road boundary of our farm, but I swear, this dog has no bones. She can fit through basically any crack. Chris had to go chasing her down the road when she went off to find me, which, of course, was harrowing. But everyone made it through the weekend and Veli is very glad I’m back.
It’s officially “the dearth.” In late July and August, the grasses and clovers really slow down, as do wildflowers. I stockpile grass in June and early July so I have enough to get our grazers through until late September when things should pick back up. Chris, meanwhile, will need to start feeding his bees sugar water to keep them going until the ironweed and goldenrod bloom.
I am trying to decide whether we should do turkeys again this year. My bandwidth is so limited with work projects, and the cost of feed is going to make them $$$$. But last year I met a ton of lovely neighbors as word got out about the turkeys, and everyone had rave reviews, which felt great. The thing about farming is there are always so many decisions to be made - sometimes I wish I could outsource decision-making!
Here’s What I Loved This Week
Getting to race my bike and hang out with a wonderful friend all last weekend. Friends are so precious, I feel grateful for every moment with the people who make my life so much richer. (And for partners who keep the chaos under control at home!)
