Just Pecking On You
You are strong, you are capable, you don’t give up easily. Most importantly: You are going to make it through whatever it is you are going through right now. One chicken foot in front of the other. You’ve cluckin’ got this. — Ruth Bader Ginsbird
Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm
I’m back to asking for your best rain vibes! We haven’t had a drop of rain in weeks and weeks—Ian went right on by us. This is a crucial grass-growing part of our year, but right now, the grass isn’t doing a darn thing. If we don’t get rain soon, I’m going to be feeding a lot of hay this winter because we simply won’t have the volume of stockpiled forage that we need. (I also have given up on having a fall garden because literally everything has gone crispy out there.)
The new automatic coop door is in and working, and it is LIFE-CHANGING! I am so happy! I never sleep in anymore, but now I could if I wanted to! And, if I come home after dark, it isn’t a catastrophe. What sweet freedom!
There’s definitely a coyote den across the street and Veli is not okay with it. She’s been keeping me up all night barking, which, while her job, is a little much. Yesterday I took her for a late evening hike, hoping she’d be tired enough not to bark *all* night. (It kinda worked! I actually got a few hours of rest!)
Here’s What I Loved This Week
I noticed these sunflowers out in the pasture this week, and I couldn’t figure out how they got there. Then I remembered sunflower seeds are in the seed mix I throw out as a chicken treat. The meat birds I lost last week scratched these seeds into the soil, and they burst into bloom right when I needed a lift.
