Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm
It’s tomato season! What a glorious time! This year the tomatoes are bigger than ever and oh so sweet and juicy. Just absolute perfection. I wish I could send one to each of you!
I am leaving the farm for two nights away for the first time in THREE YEARS. A friend and I are doing a monster mountain bike race in the mountains of North Carolina. I’m grateful for Chris holding the fort down while I get a change of scenery and time with an old friend.
We had a really near miss this week with a neighbor’s tree coming down. Right now, the animals are in a section of pasture bordering our (busy) road frontage. As many of you know, I move our critters every 2 days, so they’ll only be in this section 2 days every 4-5 months or so. Of course, a neighbor’s tree decided to give up on life and fall right when my animals were in the section closest to it. When I heard the crack, I could see the tree from our house and it looked ominously like it was across our fence, which, of course, would mean my animals would soon be trekking towards Sonic for milkshakes. Wearing a house dress and rubber boots, I sprinted all the way across the farm in the pouring rain (cursing under my breath the whole way.) Just this once, luck was on my side—it missed our fence by less than a foot, and everyone stayed safely contained. “It would be great to have a dull moment or two,” was something I may have shouted up at the sky as I walked back to the house.
Here’s What I Loved This Week
We had two lovely newsletter readers stay in our Airbnb this week. It was so fun to introduce them to our farm critters. In the drudgery of everyday farm life, it’s easy to just focus on completing tasks and overlook the joy our animals bring. Watching folks interacting for the first time with Juliet and Gimlet and all the chickens was a good reminder for me to slow down and take time to enjoy this special place.
Thank you Juliet!
Glad everyone was safe!
Oh, I love that you got to introduce visitors to the animals, it’s a reminder of the joys animals bring.
Have fun on your race with your friend, I glad you get to do that!
