Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm
After last week’s swarm miss, we successfully captured two swarms this week! One of the new hives is going off to a new home, and the other will become part of my growing apiary. Now that I have a full head-to-toe bee suit, I feel so much more comfortable getting in the thick of things with bees all up in my bizzzzzzzzzzz-ness. You’d think I would know this by now but: The right tools really do make every job easier!
The laying hens are definitely starting to slow their laying as they enter their fourth year here. Big farms generally cull their older layers, but I'm going to let these gals hang around. They’ve served me well and deserve to waddle into their dotage. (Also, I am rather attached to them).
But: I have an excuse to bring more chicks in! I placed an order for chicks and guinea keets this week, with the babies scheduled to arrive in August. Some of you will remember that there used to be guineas at Good Spirits Farm. Chris hated them, (they are very loud) so I found them a new home. But I have missed my guineas so. They’re silly, always up to something, they warn chickens of impending danger, and act as great tick control. I’m considering them my divorce present to myself.
Ugly as sin and in love with screaming. What’s not to like????
Here’s What I Loved This Week
Seeing the grass coming in, and watching every last critter on this farm embracing spring’s good vibes.
Last call: If you have a book to promote, don’t forget to email me! I will try and get the book list into next week’s newsletter!!
