You deserve to feel so dog-gon good.
And to do the things that bring you joy.
Even if your mom JUST filled that water trough. Take time for things that delight you this weekend, dear friends. —Veli Belly
Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm
We lost poor sweet Beakers not long after I sent last week’s newsletter. Chickens are so fragile, it’s so hard to revive them once they start to go downhill. She was a good chicken, and I already miss seeing her funny little top-knot hairdo hunt-and-pecking around the yard.
The salad days are upon us! Of course, that also means weed season is here—and not the fun kind of weed season. I spent almost two hours carefully sorting between overly ambitious pig weed shoots and tender carrot seedlings the other night. It’s the most tedious job on the farm, and all the while I kept thinking: Carrots are so cheap at the store; this is ridiculous! But homegrown carrots are oh so delicious. And you can’t beat the low-carbon footprint of veggies that come out of your backyard.
This weekend I’ll finish planting the tomatoes and peppers, and hopefully start prepping for the corn and black-eyed peas to go in in a week or two.
Julia would like to wish all the moms a happy Moooo-ther’s Day! Momming is hard but important work, and we appreciate you! And to everyone who finds this whole weekend hard, I hear you and am sending you love.
Here’s What I Loved This Week
Cheryl Strayed’s collection “Tiny Beautiful Things” from her time as the advice columnist Dear Sugar is really and truly a lovely book. There is so much wisdom and grace within its pages. If you’re going through something—or just need to feel less alone—it’s worth a read.
I’m so sorry to hear about Beakers. Sending you loads of love.
So sorry for your loss, AC. Those little critters leave such large holes in our hearts!
Thank you for the love and support you send out to all of us every week. I hope you can feel us sending it right back to you. You are not alone.
