The world is full of tiny good things. Like you. We’re so glad you’re here making this place a little brighter. — Itty Bitty Chicklet
Here’s What’s Happening At Good Spirits Farm
Welp, I guess one of my buff Orpingtons found a really great hiding spot to hatch a clutch of eggs, because I walked out back on Monday afternoon to find her parading around with four little fluff balls in tow. She looked quite proud of herself for avoiding detection for three full weeks!
Turns out this gal is a total master of hiding. I searched all over the barn for her nest and finally found it back behind several hay bales. That night, when I went to lock all the chickens up for the evening, I checked to ensure she’d safely tucked her babies to bed, but her nest was empty. I panicked. Hens almost always bring their babies back to the nest for at least a few days. Grabbing the super high-powered flashlight, I searched the whole backyard.
Mama hens are such easy targets since they’re distracted by shuttling wobbly-bobbly chicks around. Last year we lost our Super Mama hen to a bobcat when she gave up her life to protect her 13 babies. I worried this gal had been snatched too. Heck, I wondered if Veli, who is not totally trustworthy with chickens, had grabbed her when I wasn’t looking.
After half an hour of searching in the pitch-black darkness, I gave up and hoped she was just tucked away somewhere. Three days passed without so much of a sighting. I had resigned myself to the possibility that they’d been snarfed by some opportunistic beast when, this morning, I walked out to see Mama teaching her babies how to pick through horse poop for the good bugs. Turns out, she’s just an ace at avoiding detection!
Do I need more chickens? Not really. Does it bring me joy to watch them beebopping behind mom in a little fluffy row? Absolutely.
Here’s What I Loved This Week
Who sent me this??? It showed up without any indication of who it was from and I love it so much and would love to write you a proper thank you note! Please tell me if it was you!!
Cute chicks (both photos) to end the week! The baby chicken looks like it's already plotting world domination, though ;)
